Carpenter Ants

Identification

Carpenter ants vary in size but are much larger than other species of ants which can be helpful in identifying them. They can be anywhere from ½” to ⅝” long. While black carpenter ants are very common, they may also appear as a combination of black and red, or fully black, red or brown. If you have not spotted any actual ants, the next best way to identify a carpenter ant infestation is by the little piles of sawdust and pieces of dead insects they tend to leave around the outside of their nest entrances. They are found throughout the U.S., but are most common in the Northern states.

BIOLOGY

Colonies usually contain over three thousand workers and reach maturity in about 3-6 years. Swarmers are not produced until at least 2 years.

This timeline closely aligns with the lifespan of an ant in a carpenter ant colony, where workers may live several years and queens even longer—making early detection and long-term treatment essential.

HABITS

Most carpenter ant species establish their first nest in decayed wood and later expand or enlarge this into sound wood. Inside, nests are located in wood, insulation or wall voids. They feed primarily insect honeydew, plant and fruit juices, insects and other arthropods. Inside, they will feed on sweets, eggs, meat, cakes and grease. Workers forage for distances up to 300 feet from the nest. They typically enter buildings around door and window frames, eaves, plumbing and utility lines, and shrub and tree branches in contact with the building. Some workers are active during the day, most activity is from dusk till dawn, with peak activity between 10pm and 2am.

This behavior raises a common homeowner question: how long do ants live? In the case of carpenter ants, their long life spans and nocturnal habits mean infestations can thrive unnoticed for years.

CONTROL

Carpenter ants are attracted to moisture. To help prevent an infestation of Carpenter ants, eliminate any standing water or wet spots around your property. Trim back any tree branches and other plants from the house as these can provide highways for these ants to enter the home. Check your foundation for small cracks and openings around the perimeter of your home and make any necessary repairs to fill the holes. Lastly, make sure that any store firewood or building materials are stored a distance from the home because these ants like to build nests in stacks of wood. If an infestation is suspected and you need to know how to get rid of carpenter ants, it’s always best to contact a licensed pest control professional who can assess the situation and recommend a method of carpenter ant extermination.
