Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency has introduced new pesticide labels that clearly mark harmful pesticides with a bee advisory box, along with the precautions to use when applying those pesticides. We read every label carefully and follow the guidelines meticulously.
• Timing the Treatment Accordingly – As reported by Oregon State, an effective way to protect honey bees is to apply the pesticide when bees are inactive, which is usually from one hour after the sun goes down until two hours before the sun rises—or when the temperature is lower than 55° Fahrenheit. This may not be a convenient time, but it is a great way to protect honey bees.
• Checking the Weather – Similarly, we will not apply pesticides or insecticides when it is unusually cold outside, or there is expected to be dew in the forecast, because that doubles the amount of time the pesticides remain toxic. We will also check the wind direction and speed before applying pesticides to ensure the product will not be carried towards any known beehives.
