Honey bees are among the most recognizable and important insects in the world. Best known for producing honey and pollinating flowers, fruits, and vegetables, these social insects play a vital role in agriculture and natural ecosystems. While discovering a colony of honey bees on your property can be concerning, it is important to understand that honey bees are beneficial pollinators that should be safely relocated whenever possible.

What Are Honey Bees?

Yellow jackets are social wasps that are well known for their distinctive black and yellow markings and their tendency to become a nuisance around people. While they help control populations of flies, caterpillars, and other insects, they can also be one of the most aggressive stinging insects found in Connecticut.

 

Unlike bees, yellow jackets have smooth bodies and can sting multiple times. They live in colonies that can grow to contain hundreds or even thousands of workers by late summer, making encounters with their nests particularly concerning.

What Do Yellow Jackets Look Like?

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are social insects that live in large colonies made up of thousands
of individuals. A typical colony consists of:


â—Ź One queen bee, responsible for laying eggs.
â—Ź Worker bees, which are female bees that gather nectar and pollen, care for the young,
build wax comb, and defend the hive.
â—Ź Drones, which are male bees whose primary role is to mate with a queen.


Honey bees are generally golden-brown in color with darker bands across their abdomen. They are often confused with yellowjackets and other stinging insects, but honey bees have a fuzzier appearance due to the tiny hairs that help them collect pollen.

Why Are Honey Bees Important?

Honey bees are some of nature’s most effective pollinators. As they move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they help fertilize plants and contribute to the production of many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other crops.


Their role in pollination supports both commercial agriculture and backyard gardens, making them an important part of our ecosystem.

Honey Bee Swarms

During the spring and early summer, homeowners may occasionally encounter a large cluster of honey bees gathered on a tree branch, fence, shrub, or other surface. This is known as a swarm.


Swarms occur when an established colony becomes too large and a portion of the bees, along with the queen, leave to establish a new home. Although seeing thousands of bees clustered together can be alarming, swarming honey bees are often less defensive than established colonies because they are focused on protecting their queen and finding a new nesting site.


In many cases, swarms move on naturally within a few hours to a few days.

Established Honey Bee Colonies

Unlike temporary swarms, established colonies have settled into a permanent location and begun constructing wax comb. Honey bee colonies may occasionally be found inside:
â—Ź Hollow trees
â—Ź Wall voids
â—Ź Chimneys
â—Ź Soffits
â—Ź Attics
â—Ź Other sheltered spaces


Once a colony becomes established inside a structure, professional removal by a qualified beekeeper or honey bee specialist is often necessary to safely relocate the bees and address any remaining comb or honey.

Do Honey Bees Sting?

Honey bees are generally not aggressive and prefer to avoid conflict whenever possible. However, they can sting when they feel threatened or when defending their colony.


Unlike wasps and hornets, a honey bee’s stinger becomes lodged in the skin after use, causing the bee to die shortly afterward. Most people experience temporary pain, redness, and swelling from a sting, although individuals with allergies may experience more serious reactions and should seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop.
